Mae Sot Visit
In a significant New Year activity, the Jewel Fest Club (JFC) headed by Chairman, Mr. Pornsert Sriorathaikul visited Mae Sot, Tak province during 29-31 January 2016. The main purpose of the trip was to hold a meeting roaming with the Mae Sot Gem and Jewelry Club to exchange ideas about gems and jewelry retail business, and to visit Mae Sot, the site of increased Thai-Myanmar trade, one of the AEC gateways to Myanmar.
Upon arrival at the city of Tak, the JFC went to pay respects to King Taksin at the Great Shrine which was the first Shrine in Thailand built to honor King Taksin the Great.
The meeting was organized by Ms. Thamonwan Ruangkachon, the director of Tourism Authority of Thailand, Tak Office. She opened the meeting and introduced to JFC Mr. Somsak Kaveerat, Chairman of the Tak Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Sureerat Kreuwong, Chairwoman of the Mae Sot Gems and Jewelry Club and their members. Mr. Somsak spoke about Tak's economic situation and border trade between Thailand and Myanmar. He expected that Myanmar would be Thailand's most valuable trading partner within 3-5 years. As the Mae Sot Gems Market is the second largest gems trading center in Thailand in terms of value, Ms. Sureerat explained that gems trade started about 40 years ago when vendors from Myanmar crossed the border to sell gems and jewelry in Mae Sot. Gemstones available in the market at the moment are not only from Myanmar, but also from Sri Lanka and Africa. Mr. Pornsert introduced the JFC and distributed its latest publication "Thailand's the Best Gems & Jewelry Guidebook" which was supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to help consumers buy Thai gems and jewelry with confidence.
After the meeting, JFC visited the Mae Sot Special Economic Zone including The Asian Gems Center and the Mae Sot Gems Market on Prasatwithee Road. Moreover, JFC enjoyed the highlight of the trip when TAT-Tak brought them to cross the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge into Myawaddee for a half day tour to explore the town.
The JFC plans to continue moving along the Gems Route in Thailand and have more members to promote consumer confidence and trust in Thailand's gems and jewelry products and trade.
